The last man in line was Bruno Lefty Bicek; his cap in his hand and dried blood down the front of his shirt.

"You look like you been in a battle, son. Fightin' with the other prisoners? Where you live?"

When Bruno spoke there was blood on the front of his teeth. "No address. Just a pickup."

Then added reluctantly, because they wouldn't be taking the amplifier away until he'd said it:

"Suspicion of I shot at a old man."

"I heard you hit him."

"No sir. I missed."

"Lucky for you. You're in the clear in this town so long as you miss. We call straight murder a misdemeanor here." Before anyone had a chance to titter, Tenczara's voice turned hard. "C'mon down closer, gorilla, these people want a good look."

Bruno shifted from one foot to the other.

"Move, Lefty. You ain't manacled. So's these people '11 know you the next time they see you."

Bruno moved heavily down the two-step stair and around the platform, working his clenched cap with the fingers of his right hand.

"All the way, Lefty. You can move faster than that. There, that's far enough. That's as near as we want you."

Bruno put his cap on to shade his eyes, out of a burning embarrassment.

'rake off that cap. That's how he looks without a cap, folks. Now put it back on. That's right. That's how he looks with it on. Walk around, Daffodil. We want to see how you look when you walk "

Bruno began a dogged and deliberate pacing: five steps forward and five steps back. And turned heavily, at an imagined door. As though his life were a barred bull pen. Five steps forward and five steps back, head turned to find the promised escape that was never somehow there.

"That's enough of that, Bicek. Now stand still and turn around with your cap in your right hand."
